Health In Child Care: Introduction

What is Child Care Health Consultation?

Child Care Health Consultation is a service available to both center as well as family child care providers. This service focuses on health and safety issues in child care centers and family child care homes. Child Care Health Consultation promotes healthy and safe environments by:
  • Providing information about health and safety
  • Supporting developmentally appropriate practices
  • Encouraging preventive health care for children in child care
Who provides Child Care Health Consultation?

Child Care Health Consultation services are coordinated by specialized health professionals located in each of the county child care resource and referral agencies. These Health Consultants educate the child care community on health and safety issues. They also recruit and train other professionals to become child care health consultants.

Why is Child Care Health Consultation important?

Utilizing health care consultation services is an indicator of quality child care. This service, available to all child care providers, supports developmentally appropriate practices and encourages preventive health care for children in child care. For more information about quality standards and recommendations for health consultation services, review Caring For Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards for Out-0f-Home Child Care Programs

Who benefits from Child Care Health Consultation services?

Building a relationship with a Child Care Health Consultant is helpful to child care providers, the children and families they serve, and to the larger community. Health and safety involve more than the absence of illness or injury - they affect all aspects of child growth and development and include areas of physical, social, emotional and environmental health. Child Care Health Consultation increases awareness in these areas so that children have healthier and safer environments.
